Cupping Massage & Moxibustion

Massage cupping is based on an ancient technique. This one-day course is a modified version and you will learn to examine and how to apply negative pressure. Massage cupping can help alleviate pain, decrease swelling, increase range of motion and speed up the healing process. By creating negative pressure above the surface of the tissues, we decrease the pressure on the tissues, allowing the tissue to be lifted upwards and changing the pressure on underlying tissues, such as nerves, capillaries and fascia.

During this workshop we will outline the theory and actions of massage cupping, the tools used to perform the technique and the basics of using the tools safely and effectively. Participants will learn how negative pressure massage cupping can release rigid soft tissue, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bringing blood flow to skin and muscles. Included will be ways this technique can be used to stimulate lymphatic flow, decreasing swelling and increasing circulation to injured tissues. At the end of the day participants will leave the seminar armed with an additional useful technique that is non-invasive, painless and effective.

Outline the indications and contraindications for using cupping massage.

Understand the use of negative pressure cupping to enhance the healing of injured and painful tissues by affecting the lymphatic, fascial, circulatory and nervous systems.

Perform negative pressure massage techniques to the back, abdomen and extremities.

Recognise and identify conditions that benefit from the use of negative pressure massage cupping.

Identify various techniques of negative pressure massage cupping to stimulate the lymphatic system.

Demonstrate techniques of negative pressure massage to change the fascial structures and release adhesions.

Develop a plan to implement the technique into existing practice.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is relatively new. In 1970 the first course entitled “myofascial release” was taught in the United States.

Myofascial Release is a gentle therapy, consisting of a mixture of light stretching and massage work. During a session, the therapist will apply hands-on massage strokes in order to release tension from the fibrous bands of the muscles, bones, nerves and joints, by unblocking any scar tissue or adhesions due to injury or surgery in the muscles and surrounding tissues.

During the course, participants will learn how to perform myofascial release using techniques such as:

Skin rolling
Skin rolling seeks to remove the restriction in the superficial fascia. It can be used to pinpoint areas of tension.

Arm and leg pulls
Joint pulls connect the fascial web from the top of the head to the tip of the toes. Joint pulls will release any fascial restrictions.

Cross handed stretches
These are performed on the skin each hand pushing in opposite directions. This technique can be used over large and small areas.

Transverse diaphragm releases
This helps to free the 3 transverse planes in the body: the pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm, and thoracic inlet.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to perform myofascial release techniques. One can use the myofascial release as a therapy on its own or include it in other body therapies.

Pregnancy Massage

Another diploma which is a must for massage therapists. Ever wondered what happened to your clients once they become pregnant? They find themselves a massage therapist who is qualified to perform massages on pregnant women. Massage therapists can perform pregnancy massages on the condition that the pregnant client has passed the first tree months of pregnancy.

Your client and the new therapist often build a close relationship during this wonderful but physically taxing period. It is the massage therapist who makes the client feel great during times they often feel tired, in pain and sometimes plain sick with worry.

There is a real bonding period between the therapist and client and it is not uncommon that the massage therapist is asked to attend a birth to bring some relief and support during the labour.
It is only natural that the now new mothers like to return to their “new” massage therapist after such bonding. Unfortunately, you have lost another client and earning potential.

During our course you will learn how to work with pregnant clients safely. You will learn how to perform an effective and safe pregnancy massage. The main importance is how to position the mother to be, make her feel save and cared for in your hands.

Some lymphatic Drainage techniques.

How to position the client throughout the session.

Effective massage strokes.

A complete body sequence.

Trigger Point Therapy

The course will enable therapists, to further their skills and become more confident in their practice. Participants will learn about how trigger points come about. They will learn how to locate, identify and treat trigger points.

Working as a massage therapist have you ever come across a situation when you massage a particular area the client cries that it hurts in a completely different area? In many cases massage therapist do not know what to do, may panic and leave the condition untreated. However learning about Trigger Points will help you as a therapist to recognise these conditions and work with them appropriately and affectively.

Trigger Point Therapy was pioneered and developed in the USA by Dr. Janet Travell. Today there are many different names for Trigger Point Therapy, including Neuromuscular Therapy and Myotherapy.

Trigger Points exist throughout our muscles, but unless activated, they do not cause any problems. When a muscle is traumatized from an injury or physical or emotional stress, the Trigger Points become active. The belly of the muscle forms an adhesion within the muscle fibres in response to the trauma and creates a 'knot.' On the cellular level, the exchange of oxygen, fresh blood and the waste removal slows down and lactic acid builds up, causing decreased circulation, inflammation and pain in the area. Because your Trigger Points are full of toxins they feel sore to the touch.

When a nerve is pinched or when a bone is out of place and hits a nerve, the muscles that the nerve(s) runs through will develop Trigger Points in response to the pain and will send a pain signal where there isn't necessarily an injury, causing referred pain. Thus; a trigger point is a hyperirritable tender spot in an abused muscle that refers pain ("triggers pain) to other muscles. A trigger point in the back, for example, may trigger pain in the neck.  The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head.  The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.

A Trigger Point Therapist's job is to release the Trigger Points at the point of pain and to find and 'erase' the Trigger Points at the origin. Erasing Trigger Points can be done in a variety of ways, but basically, the therapist applies pressure directly at the site of the Trigger Point for a short period of time, usually, several seconds. This breaks up the muscle fibres within the adhesion and releases the toxins that have built up. Once the muscle fibres are broken up, they begin to repair and eventually they return to their natural state, ultimately releasing the muscle memory associated with the injury and healing the pain. The result of trigger point massage is the elimination of toxins in the muscles and the release of energizing endorphins.  A significant decrease in pain is often found after just one treatment.

If the trigger points are not treated, they can be the culprits in lingering pain even after an injury has healed, and the reason why the headache, neckache, and backache keep returning year after year. Some of the causes of trigger point activity in your muscles are stress, excessive chilling, injury, overuse, strain, as well as chemical, drugs, alcohol, and environmental pollutants.

Active trigger points keep the muscles tight, restricting blood flow and compressing nerves perpetuating a vicious pain-spasm cycle in the muscles. The effect of decreased flexibility limits movement encouraging postural patterns, which may sustain the cycle for years. Trigger Point Release Therapy is a valuable component of preventive as well as rehabilitative care.

Participants have a good understanding of what trigger points and how to alleviate them.

Participants have a good understanding how to palpate for trigger points.

Participants the technique how to alleviate the trigger point.

Participants adopt good posture at all times.

Participants will learn to recognised from their consultation whether trigger points may be the reason for the client’s discomfort, lack of range of movement or pain.

Participants will be able to perform a massage sequence incorporating trigger point technique.
